Share Paper: Contextualizing Motivational Interviewing Through Cognitive Apprenticeship

Abstract: This paper describes the creation of an online learning module for motivational interviewing (MI) as part of a larger design based research (DBR) study intended to contextualize the training of the skill through the application of the cognitive apprenticeship instructional model. A thorough description of the cycles of DBR are provided, including problem analysis, the design of the module in collaboration with a certified MI trainer, development and pilot testing of an initial prototype, and decisions regarding future directions of the project in response to feedback from the learners.
