Canadians live in urban and suburban communities, where opportunities to connect in meaningful and active ways with nature are not always obvious or accessible. This is particularly so with young Canadians, whose enthusiasm for protecting the environment is often very strong but whose opportunities for action are limited. At the same time, is aging and seeking ways to share their knowledge and passion. Our vision is to create a new, Canada-wide generation of enthusiastic, educated and engaged citizen scientists, to provide them with the tools to learn about the environment around them, and to engage them with researchers and one another in environmental reporting and monitoring. So we created NatureWatch 2.0, which takes an existing online citizen science portal and reinvents it as an integrated social networking and mobile platform for environmental engagement and citizen science, and create broad outreach programs, school curriculum activities, online mentorship and social networks.
