Abstract: Three previously published studies were re-examined using a common set of measures to further explore the role of visual information when chatting with a conversational agent acting as a historical figure. One hundred and seventy students chatted online for 10 minutes with a historical figure application of a conversational agent under 5 interface conditions and then completed a questionnaire that assessed their perceptions of the experience. Four of the common measures of the agent’s persona were analyzed in a MANOVA and revealed a significant effect of condition with the highest ratings of the agent’s persona in the No Image condition. ...
