Abstract: Gaps and misconceptions in understanding of basic mathematics and physics concepts present a serious and persistent problem in both school and undergraduate programs. PhoneLabs is an innovative mobile approach to inquiry learning in STEM education (phonelabs.net). It is an open source educational initiative comprising a series of web apps (e.g. measurement, acceleration) that run on any smartphone. The PhoneLabs project allows students to develop computational thinking by capturing, modelling and analysing the mathematics and physics of the real world.
