Abstract: Abstract: This session will present strategies for developing content specific, leveled electronic games in upper grade elementary classrooms in order to improve vocabulary. Included are two games connected with the study of affixes, roots, cognates, and the origins of words: Cognados-Cognates Connect, and Borrowed, Before, Base, and Beyond. These games extended and solidified students’ knowledge, contributed to the cultivation of a community of learners, utilized their technology knowledge, piqued students’ interest in technology, developed word consciousness, an awareness of and an interest in words and their meanings, and was aligned to the Common Core State Standards.
