Guiding User’s Attention in Chats: Evidence from Eye Movement Analysis
Abstract: Chat is a commonly used communication tool, but can lead to characteristic communication problems, also known as chat confusion. It has been proposed before that designing the chat interface with regard to cognitive processes may enhance chat-based communication and hence foster learning. In the present study, a learning session with an integrated chat was enriched by explicit references, that shall provide attentional guidance for the user. Eye movements were analyzed regarding the participants’ reading behaviors under different types of references. Results show that learners’ reading behaviors differ for varying locations of references. Against the assumptions made, the provided attentional guidance did not support the learners under these complex conditions. Here, need for further research arises.
