Abstract: Augmented reality (AR) is a tool that is currently being explored and implemented in educational contexts to increase learning outcomes. AR involves an overlay of a virtual element upon the real environment, which allows users to interact with 3D virtual elements while simultaneously being completely "present" in their actual surroundings. With the advent of intuitive and cost friendly apps that allow AR applications, accessibility has exponentially increased. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of augmented reality on learning as measured by the inculcation of 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking. The paper is framed by two specific research questions: 1. What is the influence of AR on 21st century skills? 2. What are the obstacles and possible solutions to effective AR implementation in a learning context? Findings indicate that though AR tools are effective for promoting 21st century skills, teachers need to be purposeful in the use of these tools for instruction and should be trained adequately to effectively integrate such technology into their curriculum.
