Abstract: This study aims at investigating teachers' conceptions of teaching science (COTS) and conceptions of teaching science with information and communication technologies (COTS-ICT). Conception of teaching refers to teachers’ understanding and belief regarding nature of teaching. Hence, COTS and COTS-ICT may stem from teachers’ everyday practice and cognitively associates with their instructional design, strategies, and implementation in career. This study especially focusses on such conception of student teachers who lack for authentic teaching experience. The research approaches were threefold. In the first part, this study systematically reviewed recent literature relevant to COTS and COTS-ICT to identify educators’ consensus of such theoretical construct. The second part of this study utilized the aforementioned findings as theoretical background to elicit pre-service elementary teachers' COTS and COTS-ICT through a phenomenographic approach. The qualitative findings from analyses on interview results from 60 pre-service elementary teachers in Taiwan classified their conceptions into 7 categories respectively. Last, the conceptual model revealed in this study was utilized to developing quantitative research tool for measuring teachers’ COTS and COTS-ICT. This would afford larger scale investigations in the future and provide generalized information for improving professional development of teachers.
