Abstract: Most instructors will point to one of two types of indicators for class discussions: participant behavior (e.g. numbers) or subject matter. Experienced instructors most often rely on intuition for gauging the effectiveness. Finding a more systematic means of assessing the dynamics of discussion within a classroom is an important task in effective teaching. Classroom mapping provides a possible solution. In this process, what is mapped is not the location of objects or people, but rather the patterns of engagement between the people who occupy a classroom space.
