Abstract: Teachers often assess ELL students for content knowledge in both English and native language. This paper reviews authentic assessments that can be adapted to measure ELL student’s learning, achievement and progress. After discussing effective pre-instructional assessments for teachers to evaluate capacities, knowledge and skills of ELL students prior to their enrollment in a new course of education, it presents various language proficiency assessments for oral language, reading comprehension, and writing skills.
