Abstract: No university instructor enjoys having to give a student a failing grade, especially when help is available. Students who seek help from instructors outside of class typically experience improved academic performance, yet many students do not participate in office hours. The pandemic forced universities to shift learning and communication modalities, including how office hours were delivered. As we move into the endemic stage of COVID-19, many instructors and students have persisted in the use of technology-mediated forms of communication, such as video conferencing. This research investigates the effectiveness of these alternative modes of communication to overcome barriers and improve student help-seeking behavior outside of class.
