Abstract: Developing a community of learners can increase student engagement and performance in the on-line learning environment. Teaming of students, along with appropriate mentoring from the instructor/facilitator can create a community rich with practice, discussion and dialogue making possible higher level learning and understanding. On-line education can easily adopt certain strategies, principles and practices which will enrich the on-line environment, in turn, build students knowledge, develop higher level skills in the students, and allow for deeper exploration of how the content meets the students needs.
