Abstract: Assessment is one of the most important steps in the Instructional Design process, but also one of the most frequently omitted. Beyond correcting errors in content and updating class schedules, assessment can help identify instructional as well as attitudinal problems early in the course, while modifications can still have an impact. Course management systems can help in the process by tracking student activity, managing survey and polls, performing item analyses, and more. This paper discusses answers to several questions relating to collecting data as part of an assessment in both the virtual and face-to-face classroom.
