Virtual Teaching and Learning Challenges-Online Learning Experience of Middle East Students
Abstract: Academic scholars have concluded that online education can provide quality learning experiences. In this paper we provide evidence of successful online learning experience of Middle East students in one Middle East university. The online learning process is different from the face-to-face learning process. The online learning experience depends on learners’ motivation, independent learning skills, technologies used, processes applied, and institutional capacity to provide qualified faculty support and other resources. First we describe the processes and technologies used in delivering an online course. Two alternative LMS (iDL systems and Blackboard) were used in the course. Based on survey results we discuss students’ evaluations and experience and the technologies used. Overall, students had positive learning experience in the course. Our conclusion is that for high quality learning experience an online course for Middle East students must be carefully designed and delivered considering their cultural needs and learning styles.
