Abstract: A large number of colleges, universities, and higher education institutions are offering online courses to students. Students who participate in groupwork in an online class often have perceptions of course effectiveness that differ from those of the course designers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of groupwork in two online courses by exploring a group project from the group members’ perspectives and to find strategies that can be implemented to assist students in completing groupwork online. The results indicated that students found online groupwork more difficult compared with face-to-face groupwork. The overall satisfaction with group process and structure expressed by the students differed between the two courses. There were also differences between the two courses regarding helpful factors and challenging factors.
