Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the characteristics of various course management systems (CMS), their uses in higher education, and the necessary considerations that should be made prior to and throughout the implementation process. Specifically, four major CMS's are explored, including Drupal, Word Press, Moodle, and a proprietary CMS. These systems are being used and evaluated within the College of Education at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The advantages and disadvantages of each system are weighed, along with future plans for their use.
