Abstract: Advances in freely available on-line Geographic Information Systems (GIS) open the possibility of using maps to create interactive E-learning activities. We have created a reusable learning object that combines the visual appeal of maps with the collaborative nature of on-line learning and blogging. Using this tool focuses students on knowledge representation and information sharing, and these activities use visual representations that promote deep learning. This tool also provides an effective means for students to share field data and engage in collaborative investigations.
