Abstract: This paper presents the finding of an ongoing qualitative study on student learning within online education. Data collection and analysis will conclude in September 2008. Qualitative methods used in the collection include interviews with students, think-aloud observations, face-to-face focus groups, and virtual focus groups. Virtual focus groups are conducted in the online environment using the same course management system used for instruction. Observations, expedited outcomes, and the qualitative methodology used are reported. Current results suggest that students’ use and perception of the online environment lead to a strategic approach to learning.
