Abstract: This study investigates adults’ listening strategies in ESL contexts. This is an academic report regarding the industry-university cooperation supported by Meiho Institute of Technology (MIT) and Pingtung Labor College, both in southern Taiwan. An evaluation of how effectively ESL learners apply their listening strategies is required for instructors to successfully achieve ESL listening gains in classrooms. The purpose of this study is to explore Metacognitive Awareness Listening (MAL) of adult learners in English listening contexts. Findings are expected to answer the following: (a) What MAL strategies are most in use for adult learners in English class? (b) What significant differences exist between MAL learners who perceived themselves as effective and ineffective? and (c) What significant differences exist between male and female listeners in this study? Further recommendations are shared in the conclusions for ESL listeners and instructors.
