Abstract: Quantitative path analysis procedures were used to examine the direct hypothesized relationship between the extent of both instructor and learner discourse (ILD). Content analysis procedures were used to quantify discourse. A course evaluation survey included one open-ended question on discourse. ILD is clearly a factor of great importance to learners whom recognized three competences of online instructors in creating effective learning communities: (a) Interaction in ILD; (b) Mentoring skills; and (c) The ability to provide timely and quality feedback.
