Abstract: When conducting team projects, it is often difficult to insure that the work is fairly distributed among the team members and intelligently scheduled over the allotted time. The processes are typically very ad-hoc and assessments are mostly reserved for the final deadline. These problems can be addressed by providing a set of rules that react to events and initiate automated workflows. The completion of workflows will cause new events to fire and new rules to be evaluated; additionally, the instructor, other groups, or even autonomous sensors, can fire their own events that will be processed by a given team’s rules and instigate new actions. With these pieces in place, the event-and-rule-based system described in this paper can provide instant and ubiquitous updates on team progress, the derivation of new knowledge from various inputs, and a comprehensive audit of the work performed by each team member – not to mention a far more engaging project experience.
