Abstract: This paper reports on findings of a study conducted on an undergraduate level fundamental of nursing course. A convenience sample and equivalence design were used in this intervention study to explore knowledge and attitude outcomes among beginning nursing students associated with personal digital assistant (PDA)-assisted simulated clinical experience (SCE). Few studies have explored the integration of technologies like human patient simulation with informatics competencies. Post-intervention, PDA and traditional reference materials group (control) knowledge scores were determined to be statistically equivalent. Attitudes toward computers in nursing were higher among the control group, but not significantly. Students described a positive impact of PDA-related information retrieval on their learning and nursing care and suggested PDA use helped them identify knowledge deficits and link information need with learning. Findings here contribute to the growing nursing education evidence base on use of PDA and other instructional technology during SCE to promote learning.
