Abstract: Anonymity provides a sense of safety for the online student and instructor, and generates a feeling of belonging that comes from being evaluated solely on the basis of one’s work since other traits are not easily “read” and reacted to. However, nobody enters the online environment as an unreadable slate. Everyone carries experiences and beliefs that color our interactions with others. Understanding and dismantling our own assumptions about our students helps educators model the tolerance and understanding our students can achieve.
