Abstract: The extensive collection of documentarye heritage items at the National Library of Norway is currently being digitized. Using a simple four-dimensional classification scheme, the reasonably automated process of virtualizing books is compared to the challenges of digitizing other types of artifacts. A board game from the Second World War period and an ancient map are used as examples. The paper suggests that simple but inventive game-like approaches may be useful to make historical artifacts digitally accessible for education and entertainment purposes. Due to budgetary constraints libraries and museums need to pool their creative and technical resources towards this end.
