Second Life - an Environment for Authentic e-Learning?
Abstract: Collaborative knowledge construction has proven challenging to achieve with traditional, learning management system based online education. Second Life provides an alternative and very different platform for e-Learning but its use is often limited to a few enthusiastic educators. This paper examines the potential of Second Life in strengthening authentic learning, enhancing student engagement and collaborative learning, as well as in implementing more working life oriented approaches in higher education. The data consists of the results of interviews with Finnish higher education teachers using Second Life and the outcomes of the interviews are analyzed with the help of a framework provided by the nine elements of authentic learning introduced by Herrington et al. (2010).
