Supporting early literacy attainment with an effective web based resource
Abstract: In this presentation the authors will describe their work with a Canadian school district who selected a web based tool as one of their early literacy sources to support their kindergarten and grade one students. Student’s engagement and motivation affects their academic success hence, while reading skills and phonic drills are important components of literacy development, instruction must be undertaken in meaningful ways for learners to “learn deep” and to transfer their skill acquisition. Early data analysis collected at the individual classroom and school level, as well as across the school district indicates positive results in both the kindergarten and grade one students related to literacy attainment through this technology tool. Furthermore, this research project has established a strong relationship between technology and literacy gains, culminating in two future early intervention ventures. These projects will also be described in the presentation as possible platforms for collaborative research partnerships.
