Abstract: In this paper we explore the design of opportunities for transformative learning experiences, specifically in the development of online learning environments. Although the literature urges educators to provide transformative experiences, pragmatic approaches to designing and affording opportunities for these experiences are seldom acknowledged. Through the lens of two contemporary online learning environments that have been experienced by millions of students, we provide an in-depth look at what we believe are the principles that guide the design of potentially transformative learning experiences.
