Abstract: The effective design and implementation of online courses rely on a series of factors that relate to the development of online interactions leading to meaningful learning. Evaluation of online learning should include student participation in identifying strategies aimed at meeting learner needs while improving online teaching. This paper describes two instructional strategies used to inform the online course management in a formative manner by relying on student feedback. This kind of formative assessment data allows students flexibility in interacting with the course contents, while providing the instructor with important information related to the development of learner knowledge base. The co-authors outline several considerations meant to streamline the process of using formative assessment data to enhance virtual learning environments.
