Abstract: Geographic information technologies (GIT) such as Google Earth and GPS-based navigation have saturated modern society. These tools are beginning to enter classrooms in the context of instruction on geo-referenced topics (e.g., migration, climate change, political affiliation). Effectively integrating GIT into instruction requires detailed knowledge of technology, pedagogy, and materials. However, little current data exists on practices for educating teachers about geospatial tools. The authors are conducting a detailed survey across both the geospatial tools community (e.g., Esri-affiliated faculty and staff) and the teacher education community (e.g., the SITE geospatial tools SIG). Findings will address the context, aims, and practices of geospatial tools in teacher education.
