Abstract: This paper reports on a three-year study involving the use of animated learning modules in an introductory Computer Science course (CS1). The Problem-Oriented Animated Learning Modules for Introductory Computer Science (PALMS for CS1) project uses animation, text, audio, and video to engage students and provide a set of curricula for CS1 students, many of whom are non-majors who may be lacking in problem-solving skills and confidence.
