The study of soil, rocks, minerals and geological conditions at various locations normally requires field trips. However, a number of obstacles prevent many students from making such trips. In light of these obstacles, an online field trip system was developed. As a means of improving this new system, the online field trip was put through a trial run in the classrooms of 43 science teachers with a total of 1,324 secondary-school students. This trial provided an opportunity to assess the effectiveness of the program by a means of a test of the content, to measure the level of satisfaction among both teachers and students, and to gather suggestions for making further improvements. The results of these tests and questionnaires can be summarized as follows: 1) Teachers also found that the activities corresponded to the content aims of the curriculum 2) More than 80% of students were found to have a satisfactory understanding of the content of the online field trip program.
