Abstract: This paper examines the process of a graduate school in developing a fully online writing center to support students earning master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees in fields such as education, criminal justice, business, and healthcare. Both theoretical and practical issues of creating a distance-learning writing center are presented, but special emphasis is placed on the development of clients’ scholarly identity, resisting the ever-present pressure to provide editing and proofreading services when feedback on clients’ intellectual process was more important, and negotiating difficult decisions about how to harness the potential of the available distance learning technology to offer the best computer-mediated instruction possible.
