Abstract: The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act requires hospitals and medical centers to shift from a paper-based records system to an electronic medical records system (EMR) by 2015. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics (2012), there are approximately 11 million people working in “healthcare practitioner and technical occupations” or “healthcare support occupations” in America. As the vast majority of medical staff will need to be trained, hospitals and medical centers are looking to apply the best training methods for their staff. The purpose of this study is to explore EMR training methods used at two separate organizations. This was a non-experimental, descriptive study. Through observations, surveys, and interviews, a holistic evaluation was performed to understand the processes, problems, and outcomes of each approach. In addition, this study would like to help bridge the gap between the need for EMR training and the best training solution.
