Can eLearning provide effective learning environments for secondary science students? In order to answer this question, we must first understand what an online secondary science course “looks” like. This paper uses the literature to describe various forms of online science learning in order to provide focus and comparison to what are currently considered best practices in this area. Finally, this paper provides a glimpse into the actual practices of a virtual high school operating in a large city in the western part of the United States. While this author believes the findings demonstrate the online environment has the potential to lead to effective science learning, much empirical research is still required before this question can be fully answered, particularly in the area of secondary education.
