Abstract: The de-industrialization of the Western world belongs to a deeper historical shift in which the printing press and mass-produced books are seen as quintessential industrial in nature. This impacts institutions of higher learning in general and the academic library in particular. Turning the acquisition-oriented or “outside-in” logic of the library on its head, this paper argues for a new and production-oriented dimension that supports the patrons’ needs for new writing and expressive modes including mashups, remediations and transmediations. An example of possible first steps, creating the material foundations for such functions, is described.
