Abstract: IMPLEMENTATION EXAMPLES & ISSUES IN KEEPING ONLINE COLLEGE STUDENTS ENGAGED IN A MTV DIGITAL WORLD In developing content for online courses in this digital world college students are accustomed to special effects bells and whistles. In short, they want to be entertained and engaged. This presentation will show examples of simple techniques such as animation and special effects that can be inserted into video lectures as well as discuss the issues associated with this student expectation. Three short clips (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZosVDWDrckI and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDiWdktK7uY) will be shown as examples of lecturing with animation. In the clip Dr. Marrero creates an animated teaching assistant. In the next clip the animated character stands behind her and emphasizes the important points of the lecture. In the third clip, the program "xtranormal" is used to show animated characters of President Obama and Sara Palin discussing class content.
