From One-on-One Consultation to Cohort-based Approach: An Evolving Process to Support Collaborative Online Course Design and Faculty Learning Community

This paper describes the results of integrating a cohort approach to instructional design structured through professional development with one-on-one consultation to improve collaborative online course development in a large public university in the southeastern United States. We first examine issues and challenges experienced in the one-on-one consultation approach then review relevant literature on the cohort approach which provides the theoretical foundation to address those issues and challenges. We describe how integration of the cohort-based professional development was implemented, including the timeline and description of the two-phase course development process. Results of the implementation, including survey results from faculty participants will be shared as well as recommendations for further improvement and actions taken following analysis of data.
