Abstract: Engaging students in virtual discussions has proven to be a powerful, yet challenging, mechanism to promote the construction of knowledge. Using a rubric explaining clear guidelines for the expectations of students provides scaffolding and results in deeper levels of student engagement. Including high-quality examples of appropriate forum posts as well as spending time to instruct students on proper use of virtual discussion forums leads to further success. Utilizing online discussion tools in meaningful ways allows students to build greater content knowledge through these collaborative interactions.
