Abstract: Becoming familiar with one’s new surroundings is one of the great challenges facing international students in North America every academic year. Environment, language, and social and academic customs all present obstacles to student acquisition of specialized education or training. One way to address these interrelated challenges is through use of a wiki constructed to present areas of interest in the host location, and provide a platform for improving student skills in the target language by developing abilities in written expression. This report delivers a methodology for a community-based ESL course, an exploration of student and teacher benefits in such a course, and a rationale for the use of a wiki as opposed to a combination of other non-integrated technologies.
