A Blended STEM Curriculum: Using ROVs, Programming, and Robotics to Teach K-8 Students Core Concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

Virtual Brief Paper ID: 43725

Abstract: Over the past year we have developed and implemented a blended STEM curriculum based on ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) underwater technology, programming using Python and Java, and Lego Mindstorms and WeDo kits in an effort to better teach K-8 students about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We have used this curriculum with just over 100 students in three different schools. We used a pre post STEM assessment to evaluate the impact it was having on student performance and interest in the STEM disciplines. Thus far the data shows student interest has significantly increased.
