Abstract: The ability for the online student to maintain direction in their own learning is critical to their academic success. However, not all students arrive in higher education with the necessary self-motivational skills. The purpose of this paper is to use current and relevant literature to explore key constructs of motivation that relate directly to successful online learning, and recommend practical instructional strategies for promoting motivation in online learning contexts. Key concepts from the field of motivation (autonomy, self-regulation, and peer communities) will be explored and intersected with theories and practices from online learning. Recommendations for practice and future research are made.
