Abstract: In this session, we will detail the historical trends, barriers and challenges, exciting new opportunities and initiatives, instructional ideas, quality assurance issues, research findings, and so much more, related to massive open online courses (MOOCs) and open education. First, we will summarize these themes as described by educational scholars, researchers, entrepreneurs, higher education instructors, corporate trainers, and managers and administrators who have contributed to an upcoming special issue of the International Journal on E-Learning (IJEL) from AACE to appear in early 2015. Second, we will discuss similar themes found in 30 chapters in our upcoming book on MOOCs and Open Education around the World to be published in the spring of 2015 by Routledge. Combined, author stories in the special issue and the book are quite powerful in revealing the past, present, and future state of MOOCs and open education not just in North America, but around the planet.

No presider for this session.
