Selling the flipped learning environment in higher education: Lessons from an Australian business school
Abstract: The flipped lecture, also known as the inverted or flipped classroom, has been embraced by higher education as a strategy to improve student engagement, attendance, retention and satisfaction. The delivery of technical knowledge in a flipped learning environment occurs outside the classroom using e-learning resources, with face to face classroom time spent by students in applying that knowledge through practical activities. The author’s experiences with academic and student opposition to the flipped lecture demonstrate the importance of communicating the reasons for and processes associated with implementing any e-learning initiative. This presentation will provide strategies for constructing and ‘selling’ the flipped learning environment to staff and students.
