Abstract: The aim of this presentation is to provide an overview and analysis of a commercial web-based ESL reading program presently in use as part of a departmental required reading program at a four-year Japanese university. A high level of student proficiency in reading is essential for continued academic success in this department. The extra demands imposed on the students include both intensive and extensive reading in a foreign language. The online program described in this presentation was adopted as it provided learners with an opportunity to meet these and other individual learning needs and departmental goals. The presentation will address the rationale behind the adoption of this online program, a description of its qualities and utilization, and conclude with some commentary on the efficacy of this commercial reading program from the time of its adoption.
