Abstract: The advent of massive open online courses (MOOCs) poses new learning opportunities for learners as well as challenges for instructors and researchers. To better understand the learners who take MOOCs, we conducted a survey of MOOC learners’ motivations and analyzed their level of learning engagement and completion of a course. The results indicated that instructors’ presence, structure of a course, and learners’ readiness were found to be conducive for learning experience in a MOOC. The implication of this research was to explore how new instructional design and strategies in a MOOC can be used to enhance learning engagement and learners’ intentions to stay with a MOOC.
