Revisiting “MOOCs and Open Education Around the World”:A Discussion of the Resulting Book and Special Issue
Abstract: This panel is a follow-up to the full day preconference symposium on “MOOCs and Open Education around the World” held at E-learn 2013 which resulted in an edited book with Routledge and special issue of the International Journal on E-Learning (IJEL) both published in July 2015. The book addressed topics such as quality of OER, MOOCs in the developing world, MOOC alternatives, design principles, corporate training, unbundling costs, MOOC ecosystems, and the future. Chapter contributors came from the UK, Canada, Kenya, South Africa, the Philippines, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, U.S., and Germany. Importantly, many contributors discuss ideas and programs for disadvantaged and marginalized populations, including work from the World Bank Institute, the African Virtual University, and the Commonwealth of Learning. The special issue included topics such as MOOC research trends, remedial education, instructor roles, data mining, and quality.
