ESP and Digital Storytelling for Science Communication

Abstract: For most science and technology major undergraduate students in Taiwan, English for the specific purpose (ESP) and the English for General Purpose (EGP) seemed to be in two distinguish worlds In our study, our theoretical framework derived from Vygotsky’s Cultural-historical theories with cultural mediation and the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) so EGP and ESP can be intertwined, developed, and finally synthesized in the process of Digital Storytelling news brief production by using online streaming radio and FM radio broadcasting Fifteen science major undergraduate students worked with twenty Applied English major students participated The result showed that Science and technology major students did improved their ESP and EGP development in the process of media production Furthermore, we observed EGP and ESP synthesized meaningfully as science major students had faster EGP progressive whereas English major students had faster progressive in ESP
