Abstract: Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional approach that has been used to engage learners in traditional classroom settings in a variety of disciplines. With rapid growth of computer technologies, there has been an attempt to integrate PBL in online learning environments. The use of technology plays an important role in distributed problem-based learning (dPBL) as it is in distance settings. Technology mediates learning processes to a certain degree. As Barrows (2002) queried the possibility for the development of a communication technology to adequately support, instead of distorting PBL processes occurring in face-to-face learning environments, this study discussed the role of technology tools in dPBL settings by reviewing previous work. The potential challenges encountered and suggestions were included.
