Development and Implementation of a Digital Textbook Platform Usability Evaluation Tool
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to develop a tool for evaluating the platform usability of digital textbooks developed by the Korean government aimed for nationwide use by 2013, and conduct an evaluation study for revising problems of the current platform. Categories and components for the tool were elicited by analyzing literature and the environment for using digital textbooks. Delphi and pilot study were carried out to validate the evaluation tool. Usability was tested by 324 students and 30 teachers using the tool, and interviews and field observations were also conducted. Results demonstrate that both students and teachers did not have much problem using the interface, but felt unsatisfied with the teaching and learning support the platform offered. Results imply that the platform should be improved in terms of facilitating the effectiveness of managing learning and interactions within the classroom, while eliminating technical problems undermining learning efficiency above all.
