Abstract: Access to professional development laboratories and incorporating biotechnological equipment in high school classrooms is scarce. Specifically in Hawaii, teachers often face the challenge of exposing students to current research in biotechnology and molecular biology and providing adequate hands-on experience in a laboratory setting. This study is a report on high school science teachers' experience in a professional development program held at the John A. Burns School of Medicine in Hawaii. The data sources for this study are teachers' final written evaluative statements. Two variables are concentrated on in this study; challenges teachers' reported facing in their classroom and evaluations of the website that was developed alongside the professional development program. Results show funding and resources to be a main challenge teachers face in Hawaii and a positive evaluation of the virtual learning materials.
